Appendicitis

DEFINITION:
-Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a 3 1/2-inch-long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine.
-A condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and filled with pus, causing pain.
-The appendix is a pouch-like structure attached at the start of the large intestine that has no known purpose.

CAUSES:
-Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by stool, a foreign body, or cancer.
-Blockage may also occur from infection, since the appendix can swell in response to any infection in the body.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
The classic symptoms of appendicitis include:

-Dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that becomes sharp as it moves to the lower right abdomen. This is usually the first sign.
-Loss of appetite
-Nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins
-Abdominal swelling
-Fever of 99-102 degrees Fahrenheit
-Inability to pass gas

Almost half the time, other symptoms of appendicitis appear, including:
-Dull or sharp pain anywhere in the upper or lower abdomen, back, or rectum
-Painful urination and difficulty passing urine
-Vomiting that precedes the abdominal pain
-Severe cramps
-Constipation or diarrhea with gas

DIAGNOSIS:
-Abdominal exam to detect inflammation
-Urine test to rule out a urinary tract infection
-Rectal exam
-Blood test for any infections
-CT scans and/or ultrasound

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:
-gallbladder problems,
-bladder or urinary tract infection,
-Crohn’s disease,
–gastritis,
-intestinal infection, and
-ovary problems.

TREATMENT:
-Antibiotic therapy
-Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs
-Laxatives
-Surgical removal of appendix : Appendectomy

🔵 FOODS TO BE TAKEN ->
🔻A high fibre diet full of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables.
🔻Beetroot, carrot and cucumber juices are all helpful in naturally preventing appendicitis.
🔻Whole wheat including wheat germ and bran.
🔻Green vegetables like green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, beans and peas are easy to digest and are high in fibre.
🔻Green gram is very much effective in appendicitis.

🔵 FOODS TO BE AVOIDED ->
🔻Alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
🔻Animal based foods.
🔻Fried foods.
🔻Canned foods and juices.
🔻Bakery items, which contain refined cereal and white flour.
🔻Fatty meats and cooked eggs.
🔻Oil, butter and other sources of fat.
🔻Spices & pepper.

🔲 MANAGEMENT :->
🔻Yoga Asanas like Vrikshasana,
Sarvangasana, Viparita Karani etc. can help in preventing against Appendicitis.
🔻Laxatives can increase risk of ruptured appendix so avoid taking laxatives.
🔻If condition worsens like uncontrollable vomitings, increased pain in abdomen, blood in urine or vomiting, go and see your doctor.

Therpeautics of Appendicitis

  1. ARS ALB :-
    When the condition points to sepsis, it may be the remedy. There are chills, hectic symptoms, diarrhoea, restlessness and sudden sinking of strength.
  2. BELLADONNA :-
    It has the same symptoms as IRIS T, but it ll be given after the later has failed. It has severe pain in the ileo caecal region,worse from jerk. Inability to bear slightes touch, even of bed cover. Ther is also Vomiting. Sleepy but unable to sleep. Oversensitive to light n other external impressions. Nervousness, throbbing headache. Worse by stooping.
  3. BRY ALB :-
    Stiching n burning pains agg on slightest motion. Better by lying on painful side n by pressure. Thirst for large quantities of cold water.
  4. COLOCYNTH :-
    High degree pain which may be cutting, twisting or cramping. Bitter taste. Jelly like stool.worse by indignation. Better by pressure, warmth.
  5. DIOSCOREA :-
    A valuable remedy when pain is constant, the patient has never been entirely free from pain. Bowels filled with gas with griping, twisting pains better by bending backward.
  6. IRIS TENAX :-
    Fearful pain in ileo caecal region, great tenderness to pressure, deadly sensation at the pit of the stomach.
  7. IGNATIA :-
    Terrible pain in appendix with fear of operation in an important mental symptom.
    Body hot n rigid. Gripping and stitching pains.
  8. LYCOPODIUM :-
    When the acute attack is over. It should be given fortnightly or monthly to stop recurrence of attacks.
  9. LACHESIS :-
    A valuable remedy, sensitiveness all over the abdomen from the seat of inflammation, backward n downward to the thighs. Patien lies on the back with knees drawn up feels hot, cannot bear clothing even in cold weather.
  10. MERC SOL :-
    Enteric n diarrhoeaic condition is also present. Swelling hard, hot n painful in ileo caecal region.
  11. MAG PHOS :-
    Inflamation in the ileo caecal region.
  12. RHUS TOX :-
    Extensive swelling over the ileo caecal region n great pain causing an incessant sestlessness. This also covers septic conditions.
  13. SULPHUR :-
    Should be used as an intercurrent remedy to complete the cure.
